By Jimmy Dearing – Pevely, MO (March 26th, 2016) – Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 got the 2016 racing season underway with some great action on the 1/3 mile high banked dirt oval.
The UMP DIRTcar Late Model division kept the fans on the edge of their seats as Tim Manville and Andrew Johns swapped the lead and battled side by side for almost the entire feature event. Johns took the lead at the drop of the green flag but Manville was hot on his heels in the early laps. A few laps into the event, Manville pulled along side with Johns and two the battled side by side for several laps before Manville got the advantage. As the two worked lapped traffic, Johns would once again challenge Manville for the top spot. As those two battled for the lead, Jesse Stovall closed in on them in the closing laps to make it a three way battle for the lead. With just two laps remaining, Johns right rear tire would give out, bringing out the caution which then setup a two car battle to the finish between Manville and Stovall. Manville would hold off Stovall’s challenge over the last two laps and get the win. Gordy Gundaker worked his way up from the ninth starting spot and got past Brian Diveley on the final lap to finish third. Diveley would take fourth with Mark Voigt rounding out the top five.
Michael Long was simply dominant in the UMP DIRTcar Modifieds all night long. Long would start dead last in his heat race and charge through the field to take a comfortable win. Then in the feature event, Long’s early challenge would be immediately after restarts as Kenny Wallace would apply pressure, but a couple of laps after each restart, Long would pull away. Wallace would finish second to Long with Dean Hoffman taking third. Zach Fair would finish fourth in his first ever visit to Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 and Zach Schantz completed the top five.
Tim Hancock held off challenges from his brother Tommie Seets, Jr. early on, then challenges from Darron Forrest and Travis Bittle in the closing laps to grab the UMP DIRTcar Pro Modified feature win. Bittle would finish a strong second with Forrest taking third. Seets would finish in the fourth spot while Jeff LeBaube rounded out the top five.
Defending track champion Troy Medley got the 2016 race season started just about how he ended the 2015 racing season in the UMP/AARA Sportsman division. Medley would dominate the main event enroute to the victory. Patrick Hawkins would finish in the second spot with Gary Haynes taking third. Josh Ramer and Chris Soutiea round out the top five.
Defending track champion Joe Laws would take the win in the UMP/AARA Pro 4 Stock class with a last lap fender rubbing pass on Rickey Carriker. Laws would come from dead last starting spot after mechanical woes in his heat race to get the win. Cole Queathem would finish third, John Massey fourth and David Laws fifth.
